The story

Behind the car

The owner has been an active part of the hill climbing community for over 30 years, having started out in a Morgan in the early 1990’s. A progression to single seaters saw the owner compete in a Pilbeam MP66 before commissioning the MP88 in 2003. The sister car, also with the same drivetrain was run by Mike Tregonning in the British Hill Climb Championship.

The decision was made to power the MP88 with a Rover KV6 engine. The engine was expertly built by QED Motorsport at the considerable cost of £21,000, in 2003. The owner finds the KV6 to be highly reliable and easy to maintain and it has been without issue. It has recently undergone an inspection, with the addition of new valve springs.

The owner has raced the MP88 nationally as part of the British and Midland hill climbs at venues such as Shelsley Walsh, Prescott and Harewood. Usually running 10 times a year, the car has been reliable and competitive in class. Although the new bike-engined cars in the class K(i) have progressed further over the 20 year time span, this car in the right hands could be competitive. Although, what makes this car special is the popular sound from the KV6 and the archetypal large single seater look. All considering, this is a fantastic Pilbeam single seater racing car and a fairly rare opportunity to purchase an MP88.
